You can clean up after a poop accident, but are your clothes really clean? This is a situation where you want to really make sure there is no gag-worthy aroma after you do you wash.
If your laundry doesn’t smell fresh, it simply doesn’t feel clean. Find solutions for this problem and feel confident that you have banished all traces of poop from clothes.
How to Get Poop Smell Out of Clothes
1 Oxiclean the Smell Out
Oxiclean will lift the solid waste smell out of clothing. Start by placing the soiled items in the washing machine. Add 1 1/2 scoops of Oxiclean. Fill the machine with warm water and let the clothes soak overnight.
You can soak the clothes in cold water if you like. If you decide to go with this option, you will have to dissolve the Oxiclean powder in hot water before adding it to the machine. You can also try allowing the washing machine to start to go through its wash cycle (agitate) for a minute or so and then shut it off to allow the clothing to soak as directed above. Wash as usual the next day.
2 Washing Soda Solution
Add washing soda to your regular laundry to give it a boost and get the poopy smell out! You can find this product in the laundry aisle at the grocery store. You would put it in the machine along with your detergent. It will leave your clothing clean and fresh smelling.
3 Hang it in the Sun
Sunshine and fresh air can work wonders when it comes to getting smells out of fabrics. Start by rinsing the yecchy clothes in cold water and washing them as your normally would. Then take the items and hang them outside in a sunny spot. Let the power of the sun’s UV rays lift out the stink and leave only freshness in their wake.
4 Stain Remover and Vinegar One-Two Combo
This is a one-two combination that will zap out the stubborn smell of poop from clothes. Start by spraying stain remover on the stinky spot as directed. Let the stain remover soak into the fabric for a few minutes, then wash as you normally would. Add 1/2 cup of vinegar to the rinse cycle to give it a boost. It will cut through any residual stank and leave the clothes smelling fresh and clean.
5 Hydrogen Peroxide Soak
Mix up a solution of hydrogen peroxide and water. Add the soiled clothes and soak for 30 minutes. Wash as usual. The peroxide will lift out any stains from the poop as well. You can also use a peroxide and water solution to clean poop off of a baby’s high chair, exersaucer or other equipment after a blowout, if necessary.
6 Dawn Dish Soap Rescue
The grease-cutting action in Dawn dish detergent will go to work on organic materials as well. Pour some of the detergent directly on the stained clothes. You can scrub them a little bit if you wish. Wash the clothing in cold water.
7 Baking Soda in the Wash Solution
Baking soda is a good, all-purpose odor neutralizer. You may want to buy it in bulk so that you have enough of it on hand to deal with stank issues around the house. Try adding 1/2 cup to a load of laundry with your regular detergent to get rid of the smell of poop. You can use it with every load as a general freshener if you like, too.
8 Odoban and Water
Pay a visit to your local pet store and buy some Odoban. This product is used to neutralize the smell of pet urine and feces. Soak the smelly clothes in a mixture of Odoban and water, and then wash as usual. Add two cups of vinegar to the final rinse.
9 Tide with Febreze Laundry Soap
Sometimes you need to use a strong-smelling laundry detergent to get a strong stench out of your clothes. Use Tide with Febreze to knock the smell of the poop out of your laundry. The Febreze in the soap should leave it smelling fresh.

One solution to the problem of a poop smell in a mattress can be found right in your kitchen. Spray the gnarly area with some vinegar and leave it in for about 15 minutes. Some people don’t like the way vinegar smells, but it is a lot more pleasant than sh – you know. After 15 minutes, sprinkle the area with baking soda and leave it in place for several hours before vacuuming it up. 
Mix borax powder and baking soda and sprinkle it on the stinky part of the mattress. You will need to leave it in place for a few hours to get the poop smell out of the mattress before you vacuum it up, as above. Let your nose be your guide after you have tried this method. You may need to repeat it if you don’t get the results you are looking for the first time. 
A visit to your local pet store can help you find the right product for dealing with a poopy problem. The friendly staff won’t ask who or what was responsible for the problem. Just explain that you need to get a poopy smell out of your mattress and ask for suggestions. The store should have more than one type of product that has ingredients that will break down enzymes responsible for the stink factor. You may not be able to gauge how well they are working until the mattress is fully dry, though, so don’t assume the product isn’t working if the smell doesn’t go away immediately or if you notice it seems to get worse at first.
White vinegar and water is a natural cleaning solution and if you want to tackle the issue right away, go for it. Many people have vinegar on hand, and it will not damage your mattress. The worst thing that might happen is your bed will smell like French fries, which we’re thinking sounds pretty good in comparison to the poopy mattress smell.
Renting a steam cleaner or using your own if you happen to own one is another solution to the issue of getting the poop smell out of mattress. Make sure the one you are using has an attachment for furniture, since you don’t want to be lifting a heavy unit up onto the bed to use it. Some models, like the Bissell’s Little Green Clean Machine, are made for spot cleaning and this would be a perfect choice for this type of job. 
If you haven’t already done so, you should try washing hands with dish detergent soap. This type of soap has some deodorizing properties and may help in breaking down residual poop particles that may be clinging to your palm or fingers. In many cases, the use of dish detergent will be all that is needed to rid yourself of poop smelling palms.
This household powder has been used for generations as a deodorizer of difficult odors. If imply washing hands with soap has not delivered desirable results, you can proceed to create a baking soda paste that can help to absorb the residual poop aroma. Mix a solution of one part baking soda with two parts water within a small bowl and proceed to apply to the affected areas of your hands. Once you have rubbed this deodorizing compound through hands for 60-90 seconds, the baking soda residues can be washed away to leave hands smelling fresh.
In a similar application as white vinegar, the high alcohol levels within this compound can work to neutralize fecal odors on contact. After first washing hands, proceed to splash palms with rubbing alcohol and proceed to rub the solution within the hands until the alcohol has completely evaporated. If odors remain, try a second or rubbing alcohol splash until your hands are completely freshened.
The citric acid within the lemon juice can work to slice through the difficult poop stench within your hands. Once you have soap washed hands, proceed to squeeze a teaspoon of lemon juice within one palm,and proceed to rub the juice through hands. If lemons are not available, an orange or a lime can yield similar deodorizing results.
When rubbing alcohol is not available, the use of vodka can provide similar results. As always, make sure that hands have been washed with soap before using this method. Begin by pouring 1-2 teaspoons of vodka within one palm, and proceed to rub it within hands until the alcohol has completely evaporated away.
